01

Project Overview

Community banks, regional banks, and credit unions across the U.S. use this platform to participate in real-time payment networks: FedNow and RTP.

SiGa Systems was engaged to build this platform from the ground up: a cloud-native system that connects to diverse core banking environments, processes payment messages in the ISO 20022 standard used by FedNow and RTP, and keeps transaction processing running at sub-second speed around the clock.

02

Key Results

Platform Reach

The platform supports applications serving 5,500+ financial institutions across the U.S.

FedNow Implementations

SiGa has supported 200+ FedNow implementations.

99.9% Platform Uptime

The platform reports 99.9% uptime, supporting continuous real-time payment processing.

Sub-Second Processing

Standard payment transactions are processed at sub-second speed.

03

The Challenge

Regulatory pressure to support real-time payments.

Financial institutions faced regulatory pressure to participate in FedNow, the Federal Reserve’s real-time payment service, not something they could treat as an optional future feature.

Customer expectations that outpaced existing systems.

Financial institutions faced growing customer demand for instant, 24/7 payment capabilities, alongside competitive pressure from fintech companies offering real-time payment experiences.

Integration with core banking systems that weren't built for this.

Community banks, regional banks, and credit unions each run their own core banking systems, with their own architecture and constraints. A real-time payments platform had to connect to all of them without disrupting live operations.

High-volume processing with no room for delay.

Real-time payment rails don’t tolerate the batch-cycle delays of traditional processing. The platform needed to handle high transaction volume at sub-second response times, with fraud detection and compliance controls running throughout.

Our Approach

Cloud-native, event-driven architecture.

Cloud-native, event-driven architecture.

SiGa built the platform as event-driven microservices using AWS serverless technologies.

Infrastructure as Code for consistent deployments.

Infrastructure as Code for consistent deployments.

Using AWS CDK with C#, SiGa defined the platform’s infrastructure as code across development through production environments, supporting consistent multi-environment deployments.

ISO 20022 message processing.

ISO 20022 message processing.

The platform supports ISO 20022 message transformation, validation, automated routing, and exception handling, using Amazon SQS as part of the messaging infrastructure.

API-first integration.

SiGa used an API-first approach to connect the platform with diverse banking environments.

Phased deployment with comprehensive testing.

Phased deployment with comprehensive testing.

Since the platform touched live payment processing for institutions already in production, SiGa used a phased deployment approach backed by comprehensive testing frameworks, rolling out changes without disrupting business already running on the platform.

05

Payment Processing Workflow

Payment initiation

01

A financial institution originates a payment request (credit transfer or Request for Payment).

API Integration

02

The request enters the platform through its API-first integration layer.

Message validation & ISO 20022 processing

03

The message is validated and transformed into the ISO 20022 format used by FedNow and RTP.

Automated message routing

04

The validated message is routed automatically for processing.

Payment processing & exception handling

05

The payment is processed; transactions that don’t complete cleanly are handled through automated exception handling.

Settlement & reporting

06

Settlement reports, billing, and performance monitoring are part of the platform’s reporting capabilities.

06

Key Features

Real-Time Payment Processing

Sub-second credit transfers, Request for Payment (RFP), real-time account balance and status inquiries, and 24/7/365 availability.

ISO 20022 Message Processing & Exception Handling

Message transformation into the ISO 20022 standard, digital signatures for message security, and automated exception handling for transactions that don’t complete cleanly (orphaned transactions).

Compliance Reporting & Business Intelligence

Comprehensive audit trails, automated daily extracts and settlement reports, correspondent billing and net activity reporting, and real-time dashboards with performance monitoring and alerting.

07

Technical Challenge

Complex ISO 20022 Message Mapping

The platform needed to validate and transform complex ISO 20022 payment messages while supporting high-volume real-time processing.

Automated Routing and Exception Handling

Payment messages had to be routed through the correct processing workflows while automatically handling transactions that did not complete cleanly.

Real-Time Reliability

The system needed to maintain the reliability required for continuous payment processing while supporting sub-second transaction processing.

Results & Impact

Market Adoption

The platform supports applications serving 5,500+ financial institutions across the U.S., including community banks, regional banks, and credit unions.

FedNow adoption

SiGa has supported 200+ FedNow implementations for institutions onboarding onto the platform.

Technical performance

The platform reports 99.9% uptime and sub-second transaction processing for standard payments.

10

Conclusion

Real-time payments require more than transaction processing alone. Financial institutions also need reliable integration with existing banking environments, standardized message processing, and infrastructure capable of supporting continuous payment activity.

SiGa built a cloud-native platform that brings these capabilities together: real-time payment processing, ISO 20022 message handling, API-first banking integration, automated exception handling, and reporting, supporting FedNow and RTP participation for 5,500+ financial institutions across the U.S. The project demonstrates SiGa’s ability to build custom software for complex financial workflows where reliability, integration, and scale are central to the solution.
